The Microsoft Cloud

Over the past few years Microsoft have developed an infrastructure of data centres throughout the world to support Microsoft's cloud based system called "Azure".

Each data centre consists of many servers and data storage devices all tied together using the Azure management system. The management system enables a server to be allocated or provisioned for a particular process or website

Because the whole data centre is software controlled it is easy to provision 1 or more servers to a process or website and because there are data centres in North America, Europe and Asia it is easy to provision a server in a data centre that is close to the expected audience.

The management system also monitors server performance and in the event of a failure will transfer a process or website to a second server in milliseconds.
